On Thursday, 23 April, 2015 TEBA hosted a Breakfast Briefing session on energy efficiency policies and solutions in Taiwan and Thailand at Grande Centre Point Hotel Terminal 21.

Following an opening speech by Dr. Chaiyant Savanachai, TEBA’s Executive Director, Mr. Bern Barkey, Managing Director of Robert Bosh (Taiwan) and Chairman of the European Chamber of Commerce Taiwan (ECCT) introduced ECCT’s Low Carbon Initiative (LCI). In the second presentation of the morning, Mr. Chetapong Chiralertpong, Senior Engineer, Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency (DEDE) from the Ministry of Energy, gave an update on Thailand’s Policy on Energy Efficiency.

Low Carbon Initiative (LCI)
The LCI was founded in 2012 to introduce how leading multinational firms are helping promote low carbon solutions in Taiwan. Under this initiative, European experiences, strategies, technology and knowledge are introduced to change the way of doing business to lower carbon emission for the mutual benefit of European stakeholders in Taiwan, the Taiwanese government, companies and the general public.

Like Thailand, energy in Taiwan is mostly consumed by the industrial and transportation sectors. They mainly rely on fossil fuel for energy supply, and Taiwan’s CO2 emissions per capita has continued to rise disproportionately compared to advanced economies. Taiwan however, has the ability and responsibility to cut carbon emissions.

The LCI works based on 3 pillars, which are advocacy, best practices of European solutions and CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) & Education. It shares its experience with the government and the industrial sector, advocates for international standards and certifications, issues publications and educates the public to raise awareness on low carbon solutions.

Proven by a big number of its members, the LCI is a strong movement and has a very good recognition, said Mr. Barkey.

The LCI has already issued 2 publications. Recently, it launched “The Low Carbon Initiative Publication: Energy Efficiency in Production”. All publications are download on ECCT homepage.
